Misting and Fogging Effects FAQ

What are Fog Effects?
The term 'Fog Effects' refers to certain types of misting which is used not only for aesthetics but also for cooling ambient temperature in areas that don't have existing shade structures (e.g., patios, ramadas). Fog Effects are especially useful for sunbathing, pool areas, waterfalls and uncovered sitting areas.

How do Fog Effects work?
Parts include a length of tubing, specially designed fog nozzles, and a high pressure pump designed to increase the water pressure to 1,000 pounds per square inch (PSI). At this pressure, the water is atomized into micron size droplets that flash evaporate and create significant temperature reduction. More nozzles in a concentrated area creates more fog.

I live in a humid climate. Will a misting system work for me?
Yes. General guidelines are as follows:

Temperature Reduction

Humidity

°F

°C

> 90%

5 to10

3 to 6

40 - 90%

10 to 20

6 to 11

< 40%

20 to 35

11 to 19

In humid areas, fans are highly recommended to aid in evaporation.

Where should I mount the mist line?
The mist line should be mounted around the perimeter of the area to be cooled which, if done properly, will create a curtain of mist on all open sides. The system should be mounted between 8 ft and 12 ft / 2.4m and 3.7m off the ground.

Is my patio too small for a mist system?
Patios can be as small as 16 linear feet with as few as 10 nozzles.

What are the water and power requirements for a mist system?
For a visual idea please see the Ordering Diagram on Mist System Design and Ordering.

  • Power/Electrical requirement - (letter A on diagram)
    • 110V or 220V outlet (pump has standard 6 ft. power cord)
    • 15amp or 20amp circuit
  • Water/Plumbing requirement - (letter B on diagram)
    • Standard hose bib (outdoor faucet)
    • 1/2 inch threaded ball valve

NOTE: It is easier and less expensive for you to bring water to the pump than it is to bring power to the pump. Therefore we suggest using extra 1/2 inch low-pressure water supply tubing.

Do I have to have soft water?
No. Most houses and businesses in Phoenix don't have soft water.
Soft water is NOT mandatory, but it does help with nozzle performance.

How much water does a mist system and fog effects actually use?
This will vary depending on the size of the pump and the number of nozzles to be used.
